Route history
Operated since before the formation of London Transport in
1933, the 38 A was one of the first RT routes in London, with its Leyton allocation
of six-wheeler LT buses being replaced during 1947 and 1948.
Loughton's post-war STDs were replaced by RTs in 1955,
whereupon it remained RT operated from these garages, supplemented
between 1959 and 1967 by RTLs from Clapton.
The route was discontinued in September 1968, being replaced
by changes to the 20 and the 38. The RTs on the 38
lasted a further 3 years until replaced by Routemasters, which then
continued to serve Clapton Pond until 28
October 2005. Their loss is mourned by the communities of
Clapton, Hackney and Dalston.
